Dr. Murkin was born and raised in Central Illinois. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University where he graduated Summa cum Laude, with a B.A. degree in Biology. Dr. Murkin attended medical school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and completed a residency in Family Practice through Duke University in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he served as Chief Resident his final year there. He has been board certified by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Murkin, along with his wife Mary and children, Alyssa and Grant made their home in Asheboro in 1995.
