American Academy of Family Physicians

Dedicated to improving health-care delivery through the advancement of Family Practice.

Who the AAFP are:

The American Academy of Family Physicians is a national association of family doctors. It is one of the largest national medical organizations, with more than 93,500 members in the 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam.

What the AAFP do:

The Academy was founded in 1947 to promote and maintain high quality standards for family doctors who are providing continuing comprehensive health care to the public. Realizing that the family doctor's effectiveness depends on sound, up-to-date continuing education, the founders wrote into the Bylaws the requirement that members in the Active membership category must complete a minimum of 150 hours of approved continuing education every three years to retain membership.

Foundation programs include:

  • Nationwide Family Practice clinical and research externships/preceptorships
  • Family-based research
  • Medical Information services through the Huffington Library
  • Archives for Family Practice
  • Patient education material review/data base through the Health Education Program (HEP)
  • Endowed chairs of Family Practice
  • Introduction to organized medicine through Family Practice Resident Scholars Program

What this means to you:

As a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, each of our physician has additional resources available for the treatment of various diseases. In addition, informative educational sheets from the AAFP are made available to our patients when appropriate. These added resources and information allow us to treat our patients with greater skill, knowledge, and the utmost care.
